Google Analytics Tricks for Your Website

“How to get insights about my Google Analytic data?” People approach me saying that they have a Google Analytic account for years, but they look only at page views or the number of visitors they get.

And this is wrong, this is so wrong when they have powerful free Web Analytic tools that they can leverage to learn more about their visitors and use those insights to better serve their visitors. Now, if you don’t use the latest version of Google Analytic, log in into your account and click the [New Version] link from the top right corner of your screen before we get started.

This way I can be sure that you use the latest Google Analytic interface and you can follow this article along.

1. Setup Goals

Something that it’s quite a straight forward process, it’s actually neglected by the majority of people and this is the fact that after you install the tracking code on your website you need to setup goals.

If this is still unclear for you, here are some examples that will give you traction:

  • eCommerce site – enable eCommerce tracking and start checking the conversion rates for your products

  • Engaged Visitors – people who spend more than one minute on your site

  • Readers – people who visit at least two pages on your site

  • Calls to action – use event tracking to measure calls to action

  • Best performing ads – again, use event tracking to measure your best performing ads

  • Subscriptions – check how the visitors who subscribe to your list behave

  • Purchases – if you sell eBooks or courses you can get insights about your buyers

2. Connect your Google Webmaster Tools account

Google Webmaster Tools is another free product from Google which helps you see data about your website such as the number of impressions for your search queries and their position in Google, the number of links to your site or diagnosis information reported by Google after crawling your website.

Then, you can use that data to identify:

  • Keywords with a low click through rate, but a good average position. Once you know them, you can change the meta title and description of your page to improve their click through rate.

  • Landing pages with a good click through rate, but a low average position. These pages can be easily run through an on-page optimization process that will improve their rankings.

  • What are the countries of your organic visitors and who your target market is.

3. Enable Site Speed

Site speed is also a neat feature of Google Analytic that lets you see the load time of your pages. This will help you check what pages need your attention and determine you to look for ways of speeding up the load time of your pages. If you wonder why this is important, I can tell you that the load speed of your pages can significantly improve your visitors experience on your site and it’s also a ranking factor in Google.

So a good load speed can make your visitors happy and can also increase your rankings.

Microsoft Unveils Windows 8!

Microsoft Corp unveils the first widely available test version of Windows 8 on Wednesday, giving the public the first chance to try out the slick, new-look operating system it hopes will restore the company’s fading tech supremacy.

Windows 8, as the first Microsoft operating system compatible with low-power microprocessors designed by ARM Holdings Plc, will run on tablets as well as desktops and laptops.

“The operating system has begun to be seen as largely irrelevant,” said Sid Parakh, an analyst at fund firm Mc Adams Wright Ragen, which holds Microsoft shares. “This is the release that will have to prove its relevance all over again.”

Tablets and smart phones and cloud computing have made Bill Gates’ vision of “a computer on every desk and in every home” seem quaint, and Apple Inc and Google Inc and Amazon.com now set the agenda for the computing industry.

Still, all of those companies’ fancy new hardware devices need basic operating software, and Microsoft is betting there is still more than a little room for Windows.

“The big increment here is that it’ll be viable on the ARM platform, that there’ll be a tablet form factor that kind of makes it a big deal,” said Dan Hanson, a portfolio manager at BlackRock, which holds 5 percent of Microsoft’s shares through various funds. “Microsoft correctly identified the relevance of the tablet form factor over a decade ago. This operating system may allow them to finally execute.”

THE PRODUCT

Windows 8 will come in two main flavors one that works on the traditional x86 chips made by Intel Corp for desktops and laptops, and a new version for the ARM microprocessors that have become the standard for tablets, smart phones and other portable devices.

Microsoft says it is aiming to get machines running on both the ARM and Intel platforms into the market at the same time but has not set a target date.

In both versions, Windows 8 features a completely new interface, borrowed from what Microsoft calls the “Metro” style of the current Windows Phone software. It features blocks or ’tiles’ that can be moved around the screen or tapped to go straight into an application.

The tiles update in real time, so you can see if you have emails, voice messages or Facebook notifications at a glance. If PC and laptop users do not like the new format, they can revert to the old style with a click of the mouse.

The key for any operating software — be it Apple’s iOS for iPhones and iPods, Google’s Android software for smart phones, or Windows is to attract the support of the software developers who build applications, and on that score Windows 8 is off to a decent start.

“The biggest hurdle our designers have had is trying to get inside the mood of a Metro user, where less is more,” said Paul Murphy, business development manager at Aviary, which makes a photo editing tool that can be integrated into iOS and Android apps. “That was and still is a challenge, but I think now that they’ve been at it for a couple of months, they actually really like it. They appreciate the simplicity of the design.”

Developers who have already created apps for Microsoft’s Windows Phone are finding it easier to adapt to Windows 8, said Ryan Lowdermilk, who hosts a popular podcast for apps builders.

“Porting your code over, people is finding that to be pretty straightforward. But as far as finishing that last mile where some of this newer technology for Windows 8 comes into play, they are finding little hiccups and bugs here and there.”

End of the Facebook Gaming Boom?

According to a report from IHS Screen Digest Media Research, Facebook gaming is on the decline.

Social gaming giant Zynga disputes this claim, but the research firm has put together a compelling argument none-the-less. According to them, the total number of users is stagnating, new users are more and more expensive to come by, competition is increasing, and social media has shifted focus to other activities.

The number of Facebook gamers grew by leaps and bounds in 2009 and 2010, but in 2011, those numbers went flat. At the end of 2011, only 25 percent of Facebook monthly active users played games on the platform, versus 50 percent only a year ago. Facebook has continued to draw more users, while the total number of gamers have remained about the same.

Facebook game leader Zynga actually lost monthly active users from 275 million at the end of 2010, to 225 million at the end of last year.

“Facebook rocketed to prominence as a gaming platform in 2009 and 2010,” said Steve Bailey, senior analyst for games at IHS. “However, with equal speed, the market then settled into a state of maturity in 2011, with conditions becoming markedly more challenging for game operators. While Facebook remains a worthwhile opportunity for companies able to meet these challenges, the tone of the market in 2012 will be somewhat muted compared to the optimistic outlook of the past few years.”

Bailey expounds on the growing challenge of gaining new users, and the high cost of keeping them:

“With more operators vying for attention and user expectations rising, the cost of acquiring users is growing. Viral channels for finding users aren’t as abundant as they were before, so it has become necessary to engage in cross-promotional networks or direct advertising.

Expenditures for these activities are putting pressure on the lifetime value of users, so there’s now far greater incentive to improve retention and monetization capabilities. Along with the increase in marketing costs for purchasing users, there’s also a development overhead to consider: As with any maturing video game marketplace, production values will also need to step up a notch”

In the long term, this by no means signals the end of social gaming, just the end of boom we’ve seen in past years. With the capabilities of new smart phones and tablets as a viable platform for alternative gaming, Facebook games are seeing some intense competition. Game companies are launching better and better titles that require greater commitment, and provide deeper engagement. This means gamers are more likely to spend most of their time on a select few titles rather than branch out into new territory.

The Biggest Internet Marketing Lies You Need to Understand

The Biggest Internet Marketing Lies You Need to Understand

The Internet Marketing world has really expanded in recent years. Each day you find more and more people trying their hand at online marketing. Of course, when you are just getting started in IM, it is very easy to get sucked into the different lies that are out there. These lies have been in play for a long time and have been nurtured by so many; it is really difficult for newbies to understand that they are not the truth. There’s just so much misinformation out there about Internet marketing that it can get difficult to know the truth. Here are a few of the most widely circulated IM lies that you need to make sure you don’t fall for.

You are always hearing people going on and on about how they’ve made lots of money using social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook. Before you believe this, ask yourself “does this really make sense?” Even though social media is highly popular right now, that doesn’t mean that it is also your personal ATM. What you need to understand it is that social media isn’t any different from the other mediums that are out there. It’s just another channel to drive traffic to your own website or blog. It is something that you can use to get exposure and to build your brand. But can you use it to make lots of quick cash? No. The successful Internet marketers have put honest brain sweat into the businesses that they have built. There’s no way that it happened in only one night. They still, however, will tell you lies that everyone else except for you is making a fortune on the Internet doing next to no work. Even though it’s possible to put an Internet Marketing business on auto-pilot, it still takes lots of work to get it there. Offline business sees far more failures than successes. So how come the online business world is different? Nothing – the same rules apply here, which is why you need to keep your feet on the ground. True success can only be had online when you don’t buy into these lies.

Finally, an evident lie that is found in today’s Internet marketing circles is that you only need traffic to succeed. Don’t believe this lie! You don’t need traffic, you need targeted traffic. Even when you have that, success takes more. You also need conversion. The product or service that you decide to sell needs to convert if you really want to get as much as possible from the targeted traffic you generate. Getting visitors is just one part of the problem. It is also really important that you work hard to convert more and more people. There are a lot of reasons that you might fail in Internet Marketing. But if you fall for the lies that scammers try to sell, your chance of failure increase. When you are trying to set up a consistent Internet based income, the truth is what you need to have on your side. You should make it a basic rule that you aren’t ever going to get involved with anything that even remotely resembles a get-rich-quick scheme. You need to stick to your plan and follow the principles you set forth. Success isn’t about fairness and that’s obvious when you come at it from the right angle.

5 Tips For More Effective B2C Internet Marketing

Compared to B2B companies, businesses that serve consumer audiences are typically focused on a much shorter sales cycle due to the cost and nature of the purchase.  They are searching for a one stop sale.  B2C companies typically target a single decision maker or customer segment instead of multiple decision makers and influencers.  As a result, the approach and internet marketing tactics mix needs to be more relevant to the consumer vs. the business buying experience.

The Holiday season gives B2C marketers plenty of reasons to improve their focus on best practices in internet marketing. Competition is tough for online buyers, so what should B2C marketers keep in mind with their Internet marketing strategy? Here are 5 essential tips for B2C marketers to get more sales online:

Understand Your Audience

Social media serves as a great focus group because you can see in real time how they interact and share.  By engaging with your target market via social media you will continue to learn things about them that you may have not been privy to before.  This will continue to allow you to target consumers in a personalized way to increase brand awareness and encourage engagement.

Own Your Brand

When a Minnesota based international restaurant chain had an interest in creating a Facebook and social media presence they discovered that there were already hundreds of pages created by fans on behalf of their brand.  The organization was able to analyze what their fans were already doing and strategically establish their corporate Facebook presence alongside the fan pages.  The page currently has 3.7 million fans and quickly became a major hub for the brand.  They continue to have a very high user interaction rate and have created customized landing pages to drawn additional fans into their page.

Capitalize on User Generated Content

According to SEO specialist Michael Dehaven 80-90% of total content on many major e-commerce sites is user generated.  This statistic alone should encourage B2C marketers to research what consumers are currently saying about their brand as well as their competitors.  This research will lay the foundation for strong keyword and social media strategies.  Often times as marketers we can get caught up in creating a catchy or attractive way to describe our offering instead of finding out how our consumers would describe the product or services.

React Appropriately To Negative Feedback

ChapStick has been in the media over the past few months due to their strange advertisements that generated a lot of negative feedback.  More important and detrimental to the brand was the way that ChapStick poorly handled the feedback.   Instead of listening and responding to feedback from consumers ChapStick decided to simply delete negative comments and refused to respond to the feedback. This only added fuel to the fire.  On top of this ChapStick began defending their choice for the advertising campaign instead of listening to what consumers were saying.  While I believe ChapStick did eventually release an apology it was too little too late.  If you would like to read more about the campaign and ChapStick’s response be sure to check out this article released by AdWeek.

How do you think ChapStick could have handled this situation better?  Perhaps some real time research and crowdsourcing could have helped create a more consumer friendly campaign in the first place.  If ChapStick had run a promotion or campaign for consumers to help put together the campaign they would have not only had a better product but consumers would have been more excited to share the information with their networks therefore increasing ChapSticks visibility even more.  However, a realistic solution would have been very simple.  Listening and responding to negative press will help manage the relationship with the consumers that are unhappy as well as anyone else they share information with.

Build Brand Loyalty

If you have effectively researched and interacted with your audience then you will have a better understanding of what sort of information they like to consume and share.  Providing top notch customer service  via social media and other web properties can also be a great means of building brand awareness and encouraging loyalty.  Some other tactics might include creating number of promotions or discounts to encourage repeat businesses, or providing your consumers with “insider information” that has not been made available to the general public.
